The Griers Fork newsletter has a new format and name. It's now "The Fork; Taste the Difference." Send comments and suggestions to contact@griersfork.org.

The Griers Fork newsletter remained unnamed for its first three issues, until "The Fork in the Road" was selected by vote at the Griers Fork Spring Picnic on May 13, 2000. Beginning in January 2001 "Griers" was inserted in the name in the masthead to better identify it with the Griers Fork neighborhood. With a new masthead design created in July 2002 to match the lettering in the neighborhood entrance monument, the newsletter name became "The Griers Fork in the Road."

Almost all information in the newsletter since January 2001 also appears somewhere on this web site.

Contributions by Griers Fork residents are welcome and encouraged. Possibilities are:

* A news item about you, your family, or the community. Have you or a member of your family won an award or accomplished some milestone? Do you have a special interest or hobby you'd like to share with your neighbors? Are you aware of some event or activity going on in Charlotte that might affect Griers Fork?

* Regular contribution. Would you like to make a regular contribution on a specific topic, like gardening or recycling? If so, you could be a regular feature of the newsletter.

* Questions. Do you have a question that you'd like to ask the Board of Directors or Prism Realty? Is there an issue you believe hasn't been adequately covered and would like more information about?

* Letters to the editor. Would you like to express your opinion on some community issue?

* News reporter. The editor will cover most major issues through involvement with the Board of Directors and contacts with Prism Realty. However, assistance collecting information on residents would be appreciated. Birthdays, new babies, and other events can be covered if someone is able to collect information about them.

* Pictures. Digital and printed pictures are welcome (the editor has a scanner), but photographs don't photocopy well on the discount copy machines.

* Spanish translations of key news items.

* Suggestions. Do you have any other suggestions for news topics?

* Free Advertising - See link

Please contact the editor with your ideas and contributions.

Can I advertise in the newsletter?

Certainly. Advertising is offered as a free service to Griers Fork homeowners. It’s generally limited to one of the following:

  • Products or services that you offer from a small business that you operate out of your home. Do you sell cosmetics or ready-made food mixes? We have space for you. Are you manager of the local Dominos? Well, you’re on your own.

  • Other services, such as tutoring, babysitting, or yard work. Any of you teenagers ever need any extra money?

  • Household items for sale (or to give away)

  • Home improvement-type services that you recommend. The provider doesn’t have to be a resident, but a resident has to recommend the provider.

Most ads will run continuously until the requester asks to have them removed. The Items for sale and non-resident services ads generally will run only once. Contact Jennie Biggers for more information.

Letter to the Editor
Speed Limits and Children

June 5, 2005

My husband and myself have been living here since 1999. We have seen speeding increase though out the neighborhood. I realized everyone needs to slow down, but you can only take responsibility for yourself and your driving. The problem that I am having is some parent do not make their children stay out of the streets. I have seen cars literally slam on brakes because children will not move out of the way. I was outside today washing my car and noticed children who would not move when the cars came by them. I had to tell the children to get out of the road. One child even fell in front of the car before he got out of the road and for the record these cars were not speeding. Parents need to take responsibility of their children when they are playing outside. We should not blame the drivers even if they are speeding because we all know everyone speeds, but we can control our children from playing in the streets.

Sincerely,
Concerned Resident in Griers Fork

Kids at Play

July 2, 2001

To whom it may concern:

It concerns me as both a homeowner and parent that so many of our neighboring parents have such little disregard to others property. While I embrace the spirit of community activities among the children in Griers Forks, it concerns me when these kids have no respect for my own piece of property/privacy.

I happen to live in one of the cul-de-sac areas in which a lot of these activities take place. I take pride in attempting the upkeep of my yard and to have children run through/into my yard upsets me. On many occassions, they seem to congregate right in front of my home, usually what I consider past normal playing hours; on a specific occurance, I saw them kicking a ball against another home. The street area is used to for transportation of vehicles* - it should not be used as a playground. There are several other locations in which children should look to play outdoor activities - their own yard, the common area/greenway at the front of Griers Fork, Steele Creek Elementary/Kennedy Jr. High school, or several local Char-Meck parks.

With the onset of summer, the playing of music at excessive levels seems to be another cause for concern. I can appreciate the need to listen to ones music but the volume should be where it does not impact the neighboring homes. I'm not sure whether there is a stipulation in the HOA, but I believe if not, one should be amended to protect the common good of the neighborhood.

I would appreciate if the board of directors could take heed to these issues. Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss further.

Sincerely,
Kevin Boger

* I concur with the anonymous letter printed in June's GF newsletter [see below] - speeding is a problem within our community. Everyone is responsible for the safety of our neighborhood roads. Going an addtional 10-20mph is only save seconds off of your commute time - SLOW DOWN! Since we have been annexed into the Charlotte city limits, I think 25mph signs should be posted and enforced.

Anonymous Letter - Slow Down

June 2001 - The following unsigned note was placed in the newspaper tubes at some Griers Fork residences and appears here with no changes. Although the editor questions the statement about speeding board members, speeding IS a serious problem in Griers Fork. Many residents, including the Board of Directors share the concern expressed by this parent and encourages everyone to pay heed. The safety of our children should be a major priority for everyone. The board plans to contact the city about traffic issues after June 30. (Note that letters to the editor are welcome, but they preferably should be signed.)

This letter may or may not apply to your household.

I am a concerned resident of Griers Fork. I have a 5-year-old daughter and it burns me up to see people speeding through this neighborhood. I would like to think that those of us who have children would be more cautious and alert. So this leads me to believe that the majority who use excessive speeds do not have children since you are so carefree about life or either do not place a high value on life. This letter is to inform you that I do place a high value on my childs life and if someone hits her because you are speeding then you better be prepared to deal with the consequences and be held liable for your actions. Trust me on this, sorry is not going to be enough. We have a homeowners association where even some of our board members are speeding. If you feel you just have to speed then you need to go up to Lowes Motor Speedway and speed all you want because this is a housing community where there are children at play. If I am watching my daughter ride her bike in the driveway and she happens to roll out in the street like most kids like to do I may not have time to stop her before some idiot comes speeding up the street. For those of you who continue to speed, you will be reported to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The bottom line is...SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
