Mecklenburg County GIS

The map below was derived from the previous version of the Mecklenburg County GIS Real Estate System. It shows the lots and lot numbers for the two sections of Griers Fork. The area shaded green is the greenway that is now owned by Mecklenburg Park and Recreation.

TerraServer Air Photos

Did you ever wonder what Griers Fork looked like before our houses got built? Well, it was cow pasture, as the 1996 aerial photograph below from TerraServer shows. Match the shapes of the streams in the upper left of the photo to those on the map above. Brown-Grier Road arcs across the top of the photo, and Kennedy Middle School is in the upper right. The older Twelve Oaks subdivision is at the bottom of the photo. Generally, Griers Fork was built in the area without trees.

The current aerial photograph of the Griers Fork area on TerraServer is from March 14, 1998, when the streets were just being laid out.

TerraServer has aerial photographs and topographic maps for the almost the entire United States.

Visit the TerraServer web site. Search for a particular area and then zoom and pan around for the view you'd like.

Census Bureau

TIGER is the Census Bureau's automated mapping system. All census maps now are produced from this system. (TIGER stands for Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing, but mainly it's just a catchy acronym.)

The map below was taken for the Census Bureau's American FactFinder web site, which is where data from the 2000 census are being posted. Select "Reference Maps" on the American FactFinder page to create maps showing census geography for any area of your choice nationwide.

The map below shows the Charlotte city limits as of January 1, 2000 and part of census tract 59.04. Griers Fork is right in the middle. Look for "Dingess Rd."

Directions to Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church:

The church is on the corner of S Tryon St (Hwy 49) and Westinghouse Blvd. Go south on S Tryon St from Sandy Porter Road (near Food Lion). Continue through the blinker light at the Fire Station. At the next light—Westinghouse Boulevard—make a U-Turn. Then turn right immediately into the church parking lot. The meeting is in the Fellowship Hall, which is the separate building to the right of the main building. It’s straight back from where you entered the parking lot. The building’s number is 9401C.
